Park progress update from, Park Warden

This spring Catton Park has seen much activity, as the renovation and restoration of the grounds has made much progress in moving towards its next exciting stage.

April saw the planting of over 1,000 trees, helped by volunteer groups. The young saplings included field maple, lime, hazel, and sweet chestnut, which, in years to come will bulk up and enhance existing woodlands.

In May work began on the major task of improving access to the main track. Local contractors moved in to begin resurfacing, following the line of existing historic track. While scraping back the surface, many of the original foundations were unearthed, revealing a foundation of bricks and gravel. On to this existing base a new surface of recycled road tarmac, topped with fibre decking (a compacted gravel type material) was laid.

In June the path laying programme continued, with most of the tarmac laid along the major access routes. Six dog waste bins were placed at popular entry points around the park, kindly donated by Broadland District Council. Fencing was put in place for the new picnic area, located in the South West corner of the park. The new site will offer a dog free space within which to relax, an environmental play area complete with climbable tree trunks and a grassed maze will follow in due course!

Over the months many groups of all ages, have visited the park, participating in a diverse programme of guided walks and activities. With events ranging from an Easter egg hunt, to tree identification, bramble bashing and early morning bird walks there has been something of interest for everyone.

Perhaps the most unusual activity was the metal detecting conducted by the New Farm Aviation Metal Detection Group. This uncovered many interesting artefacts from World War two Bomber, Tommy Thumper II which crashed in the park in 1945. The newly discovered finds are now on display at the New Farm Museum, at Frettingham-further details of which can be found at: www.oldcatton.com

A big thank you to all those who have shown interest and enthusiasm in Catton Park so far. We welcome your continued support, which will ensure that this is kept a special space.

The official opening of Catton Park is anticipated in autumn, details of which will be available nearer the time.
