Many people will have noticed that work
continues in Catton Park to restore the
parkland. This work has included tree
management and laying a hard surface path
in the western woodlands suitable for
wheelchair use, post and rail fencing along
the St.Faiths Road boundary and preparation
of the field for sowing grass and wild
flower seeds in the park area. The land
immediately behind the Spixworth Road
cottages adjacent to the Park has been fenced
off. There will be six ‘kissing gate‘
entrances to the park, five of which will be
suitable for wheelchair use.

During September and
October heavy machinery was working on the site in
connection with restoration of the grassland
in the centre of the park.
The paths in the woodlands will be generally
available for use. It is, however, requested that people not to walk
on the seeded area until grass is established.

The main north/south and the east/west
hard surface paths will hopefully
be completed by the end of the year with
compacted surfaces suitable for
wheelchair use.

During the summer the Catton Park Trust
used a new technique called
‘terraventing’ to try to assist the longevity of some of the
older trees within the
arable land, which have suffered from exposure and or compaction
of their root
zones. This involved blowing air into the root zone and feeding
them with a mulch
over the next few months. These trees will now be avoided by
heavy machinery
to allow their restoration to continue over several years.

Matt Caley, the Park Warden, and Ken
Leggett have met with the Oak Grove
Community Group and the Fiddlewood
Greenfields Group and will be making a
presentation at future group meetings.
A presentation will also be made to
The Old Catton Society. The Trust has
contributed to the Church Street Middle
School Newsletter and Matt and Ken have
introduced themselves at the School
Assembly in September. The Trust is
working closely with the head teachers at
The Hall School and Church Street Middle
School and they hope to prepare an
Education Plan for the use of the park early
next year. In addition, Matt and Ken
have visited most of the
residents who live adjacent to the park and
introduced themselves to many of the regular
walkers.
