Matt was compiling a wild flower

survey using quadrates and

percentage cover to estimate the

amount of species present in the

woodland, and newly planted field

margins.  The resulting data is then

entered into a database, this will be

used to show the increase in wild

flowers that can be expected.

 Other works involved photo

monitoring to keep a record of the

landscapes around the estate and

guided walks around the woodlands

explaining the principles of woodland

management.  He has also been

involved in the production of a leaflet

on the woods available, and how the

timber is used after its felled.

Prior to working at Heligan, Matt was

self employed managing 'countryside

estates' - his own business set up to

offer a comprehensive practical

estate management service.  The

work involved fencing, Japanese

knotweed control hedging, contract

work for a TV company, footpath

repairs and maintenance and he was

contracted by The National Trust,

farmers and local councils.

Matt gained many skills working for The National Trust as a trainee warden on

a 3 year career-ship.  During this placement tasks involved fencing, hedging,

footpath repairs, hanging gates, constructing stiles both wooden and granite

and heath land burning to regenerate the lowland heath land. Towards the end

of the training, Matt lead projects such as Japanese knotweed control and

vegetation management on archaeological sites with the use of volunteers

and school groups.

Matt is very happy to discuss any questions or matters

relating to his work in Catton Park.  Feel free to call him on

07786 338749.

We wish Matt well on his new venture with Catton Park!
