We'd like to introduce you to Matt Caley.

Matt was appointed as the Catton Park

Warden on 1st August 2006 and is

employed by the Catton Park Trust.

Now firmly ensconced in South Lodge,

Matt intends to make himself known to

the residents adjoining Catton Park

over the coming weeks and months.

Matt was employed at The Lost Gardens

of Heligan within their woodland

department.  Here he carried out a wide

variety of tasks ranging from tree risk

assessments and veteran tree

surveys to remedial tree surgery work,

along side veteran tree management.

He was also responsible for the welfare

of the Wiltshire Horn flock of sheep,

and the management of the fields.

Matt was fully involved in the woodland

management from thinning to coupes,

then replanting with native and some

specimen trees. A recent project that

he was involved in was opening a new

woodland area allowing visitor access.

Matt undertook tractor work to

extract timber using winches and the

forwarder.  High quality timber is

planked by the woodland team and

the remainder is turned into charcoal

during the summer producing about

three tonnes.  This is sold as BBQ

charcoal, with artist's charcoal being

produced in the same kilns.

All charcoal products are promoted

and sold at local and agricultural

shows, by the woodland team.
